Sizing

How many porta potties does a festival need?

A 1,500-person festival lasting 6 hours with beer and food needs 58 toilets and 29 hand-wash stations under our house method. Use 1 unit per 35 guests for 4–8 hours, or 1 per 25 for days over 8 hours. Add 1 unit per 100 guests for alcohol, then make 5% of each cluster wheelchair-accessible.

Worked example: 1,500 guests, 6 hours, beer garden, food trucks

  1. 1,500 ÷ 35 = 42.9. Round up to 43 units.
  2. Alcohol: 1,500 ÷ 100 = 15 more units, for 58 toilets.
  3. Split into 4 banks of 14–15 units. 5% of 15 rounds up to 1, so each bank gets 1 wheelchair-accessible unit (4 total).
  4. Food served: 58 ÷ 2 = 29 hand-wash stations, placed at banks and food lines.

Count your peak expected attendance, not just ticket sales. The method is our house rule; the accessible count follows the 2010 ADA Standards. See the porta potty sizing guide for smaller events.

Our house method, always rounded up. Bank count is our layout suggestion with up to 20 units per bank.

Accessibility

How many wheelchair-accessible porta potties does a large event need?

A large event needs at least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster to be wheelchair-accessible, with a minimum of 1 per cluster, under 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. A bank of 20 units needs 1 accessible unit. A bank of 21 to 40 units needs 2. The count applies to every cluster, not the event total.

From 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. This is the legal minimum; confirm with your permit office or venue.

Our recommendation goes a step further: put the accessible unit at the end of each bank closest to the main path, on the firmest ground, with no curb or ruts in the way.

Hand washing

How many hand-wash stations does a festival need?

A festival that serves food needs 1 hand-wash station for every 2 toilets under our house method, with a minimum of 1. A 58-toilet festival needs 29 stations. Put most of them at the restroom banks and the rest at food truck rows and the beer garden, so lines at the toilets do not grow.

  • Model: PolyJohn Bravo, 2 foot-pump sinks, soap and paper towels.
  • Water: about 34 gallons of fresh water per station, with a grey-water tank.
  • Footprint: about 35" W × 26" D × 55" H. Line them up beside each bank.
  • Refills: on multi-day events, water, soap and towels are refilled on each service visit.

See the full specs on the hand-wash station rental page.

Permits

Do I need a City of Denton special event permit for festival restrooms?

A public event on City of Denton property usually needs a special event permit from Denton Parks & Recreation, (940) 349-7275. Apply at least 60 days ahead, or 90 days if the event has alcohol or amplified noise. The permit site map must show every portable restroom and trash location, so book units before filing.

  1. Estimate attendance and run the count above, including accessible units and hand washing.
  2. Call dispatch to hold the units for your dates. We send an itemized quote you can attach.
  3. Draw the site map with each restroom bank, hand-wash line, trash point and the truck service lane.
  4. File with Parks & Recreation 60 days ahead, or 90 with alcohol or amplified sound.
  5. Send us the approved map so the crew sets banks exactly where the city approved them.

Source: City of Denton Special Event Permit Applications. Rules change, so confirm with the city before you file. This is not legal advice. Our Denton event permit restroom guide walks through the site map.

Legal minimum vs our recommendation. The city sets what your permit needs. ADA §213.2 sets the accessible minimum. Our sizing method is a house recommendation to keep lines short. When the city or venue asks for more, follow them.
Outside the city limits? Events in other Denton County towns follow that town's or the county's rules. Call the local permit office first.
Layout

How should porta potty banks be laid out at a festival?

We suggest festival porta potties in banks of 10 to 20 units, spread so every part of the grounds has a bank close by. Each bank needs level ground, 3 feet of clear space at every door, and a service lane about 10–11 feet wide behind it so the pump truck reaches within 25 feet.

Doors face the crowd

Turn doors toward the main walkway and the service side toward the truck lane. Pumping happens behind the bank, away from guests.

Banks near demand

Place one bank near the beer garden, one near food trucks, and one near the main stage. Lines form where people drink and eat.

Accessible unit on the end

The accessible unit goes on the bank end closest to a hard path, with no curb, ruts or cables in the way.

Hand washing beside each bank

Line stations next to the exit side of each bank so guests flow out to wash, not back into the line.

Light it

Evening events need light on each bank. Plan a light tower or string lights in your vendor layout.

Stake it in spring

March–June storms bring high wind in Denton. We stake or strap banks on open lots on request.

More spacing tips are in the porta potty placement guide.

Servicing

How are porta potties serviced during a multi-day festival?

A multi-day festival gets daily or nightly porta potty service, priced per visit on the quote. A 1-day event under normal use needs no mid-event service. For 2 or more days, our crew pumps each unit, cleans it, restocks paper and sanitizer, and refills hand-wash water after gates close or before they open.

  1. Pick the service window. Nightly service after close keeps trucks out of crowds.
  2. Keep the service lane open. Vendor trucks parked in the lane block pumping.
  3. Pump and recharge each holding tank with fresh deodorizer.
  4. Clean and restock seats, floors, paper, sanitizer, soap and towels.
  5. Walk the banks. The crew checks latches and footing and flags any damaged unit.

When should I book porta potties for a Denton festival?

Book festival porta potties at least 60 days ahead, the same time you file a City of Denton special event permit. Big Denton dates sell out units first: the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival in late April, North Texas State Fair & Rodeo in August, UNT football Saturdays and May and December graduation weekends.

FAQ

Festival and large event restroom questions

How many accessible units do we need if we have 3 restroom areas?
At least 3: the 2010 ADA Standards §213.2 apply the 5% minimum to each cluster, with a minimum of 1 per cluster. A bank of 21–40 units needs 2. Our wheelchair-accessible Comfort XL typically runs $225–$325 per event before tax. Confirm your event's rules with the permit office or venue.
How many porta potties do I need for a festival of 1,000 people?
Under our house method, a 1,000-person, 6-hour festival with beer and food needs 39 toilets: 29 for the crowd plus 10 for alcohol. That includes at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit per cluster and about 20 hand-wash stations. Call (940) 275-3799 and dispatch checks the plan against your site map.
Do I need a permit for porta potties at my Denton event?
A public event on City of Denton property usually needs a special event permit from Parks & Recreation, (940) 349-7275. Apply at least 60 days ahead, or 90 days with alcohol or amplified noise. The site map must show restroom and trash locations. Confirm the details with the city; we do not file permits for you.
Will you service the units during a multi-day festival?
Yes. Multi-day festivals can get daily or nightly service: pump, clean, restock paper and sanitizer, and refill hand-wash water. Night service after gates close keeps trucks out of the crowd. Each extra service visit typically runs $45–$75 per unit before tax and is listed on the quote.
Can you put them in a specific spot in the park?
Yes. Mark each bank on your site map or drop pins in Google Maps, like "north lot, next to the food trucks." Our crew places units to that plan. Each bank needs level ground and a truck lane about 10–11 feet wide for service.
Is it cheaper per unit if I order a lot of porta potties?
Multi-unit orders share delivery and pickup trips, so the delivery cost per unit drops on a festival order. Standard event units typically run $165–$245 each before tax for 1–5 days. Your itemized quote shows the unit count, service visits, delivery and tax.
When will the units be set up and taken down?
Most festivals get units 1–2 days before gates open, so you can walk the layout before vendors arrive. Pickup is usually the next business day after the event. Sunday is not a delivery day, so Sunday-ending festivals get a Monday pickup.
