OSHA crew count

How many porta potties does OSHA require on a construction site?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 requires 1 toilet for a construction site with 20 or fewer workers. A site with 20 to 199 workers needs 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. A site with 200 or more workers needs 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. Each standard PolyJohn PJN3 has a seat and a urinal.

Legal minimum from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c), Table D-1. Service frequency is our recommendation, based on a 40-hour week.
Workers on siteOSHA minimum (Table D-1)Standard units (legal minimum)Our recommendation
1–101 toilet11 unit, weekly service
11–201 toilet11 unit, service 2× per week
21–401 seat + 1 urinal per 4012 units, weekly service each
41–801 seat + 1 urinal per 4023–4 units, weekly service each
81–1201 seat + 1 urinal per 403Call dispatch for a site plan
200+1 seat + 1 urinal per 50Workers ÷ 50, rounded upCall dispatch for a site plan

Worked example: a 45-person framing and MEP crew

  1. 45 workers is more than 20, so the 1-per-40 row applies.
  2. 45 ÷ 40 = 1.13. Round up to 2 seats and 2 urinals.
  3. Each standard unit has 1 seat and 1 urinal, so the legal minimum is 2 standard units.
  4. Our recommendation is 3 units so lines stay short at lunch, each serviced weekly.

Count every trade on site on your busiest day, not just your own crew. This page is not legal advice. Confirm site rules with your general contractor or inspector. Our OSHA porta potty requirements guide covers mobile crews, farms and the full rule text.

Handwashing

Does OSHA require a hand-wash station on a jobsite?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities on a jobsite where workers handle paints, coatings, herbicides, insecticides or other harmful contaminants. Those washing facilities must sit near the work and let workers remove the substance. Our two-sink hand-wash station or the deluxe unit with a sink covers that need for 1 crew.

Hand sanitizer comes in every standard unit. Sanitizer does not remove paint, sealant, concrete dust or chemicals well. Crews doing finish work, coatings, roofing tear-off or concrete usually want running water.

  • Hand-wash station: PolyJohn Bravo, 2 foot-pump sinks, soap and paper towels, about 34 gallons of fresh water. See the hand-wash station specs.
  • Deluxe flushing unit: PolyJohn Fleet with a sink inside. Good for small crews on finished-home remodels.
  • Refills: fresh water and soap are restocked on each weekly service visit.
Legal minimum vs our advice. 1926.51(f) is the legal rule for crews exposed to harmful contaminants. Our advice is broader: put 1 hand-wash station next to every jobsite bank where crews eat lunch. Confirm the rule for your trade with your safety officer.
From our call logs
9 of 27

callers asked about a sink or hand washing before they booked, including an owner-builder who asked if the jobsite toilet had a little hand-wash. Standard units have sanitizer; sinks are an add-on.

Servicing

How often is a job site toilet cleaned?

A Brandon Rental Works job site toilet is serviced once a week, and that weekly visit is included in the 28-day rate. Crews of 11 to 20 workers, or any crew of 10+ in a Denton summer, usually need 2 visits a week. Extra service visits are added to the next invoice.

What the service tech does on every visit

  1. Pump the 60-gallon holding tank and recharge it with fresh deodorizing chemical.
  2. Scrub and sanitize the seat, urinal, walls, floor and door handle.
  3. Restock toilet paper and sanitizer; refill water and soap on sink units.
  4. Check the unit: latch, vent and footing. If it tilted or the ground washed out, we reset it.
  5. Hang a dated service ticket inside the door so your superintendent can show the service record.

Need a visit before an inspection or a big pour day? Call or text (940) 275-3799 and we add it to the next route.

Service schedule we suggest

SituationVisits per unit
1–10 workers, 40-hr week1× weekly (included)
11–20 workers on 1 unit2× weekly
10+ workers, June–September2× weekly
Saturday crews or 50+ hour weeksAsk dispatch; often 2×
Remodel, 2–4 trades a day1× weekly (included)

Denton's average July high is about 96°F. Heat speeds up odor in a holding tank, which is why summer crews of 10+ get a second visit.

Billing

How does 28-day jobsite billing work?

A jobsite porta potty is billed every 28 days, not by calendar month, and the 28-day rate includes weekly service. The rental clock starts the day the unit is dropped off. There is no contract: the rental auto-renews every 28 days until you call for pickup, and pickup happens within 1–2 business days.

Billing termHow it works at Brandon Rental Works
Billing cycleEvery 28 days. 13 cycles cover a full year, so you never pay for a "month" the unit was not on site.
First paymentThe first 28-day cycle is paid upfront by card or secure online invoice link.
Later cyclesCharged automatically to the card on file, with an emailed invoice each cycle. Business accounts may get invoicing.
Start dateThe day of drop-off, not the day you booked.
ContractNone. Keep the unit 1 cycle or 10.
Ending the rentalCall or text (940) 275-3799. Pickup within 1–2 business days.
DamageNormal wear is ours. Vandalism, fire, tipping, graffiti or loss is billed to the renter.

long-term callers in our call review were on 28-day billing, and none of them needed a contract. Most asked one thing: do I have to call to end it? Yes, and pickup follows in 1–2 business days.

Running longer than one cycle?

Remodels often run 2–3 months and ranch or landscape jobs can run 5. Our long-term porta potty rental page covers autopay, extensions and seasonal pauses in detail.

Emergencies

My supplier didn't deliver — can you get a porta potty to my jobsite today?

Yes, in most Denton County ZIPs a construction porta potty can arrive the same day when you call (940) 275-3799 by 12:00 noon, Monday through Saturday. Same-day stock is standard units and hand-wash stations. A same-day fee may apply, and dispatch gives you the amount before you book.

One roofing contractor in our call logs had a crew on the roof and no toilet because his regular supplier never showed. He needed a unit for 3 days and could not understand why a short job was priced like a full month. That is a fair question, so here is the plain answer.

  • Jobs of 1–5 days can be booked as a flat short-term rental instead of a 28-day jobsite cycle. Ask for it. See short-term and emergency rentals.
  • Jobs longer than 5 days go on the 28-day cycle, which includes weekly service.
  • Every fee is named first. Same-day fee, distance fee and tax are on the quote before you pay.

callers asked for same-day delivery. Two were contractors: an underground utility crew and a roofer whose supplier no-showed. We keep standard units loaded in Denton each morning for exactly that call.

Owner-builders

My builder didn't provide one — who supplies the porta potty on a home remodel or new build?

The general contractor usually supplies the job site toilet on a home remodel or new build, but 3 of the 7 construction callers in our review were homeowners ordering their own. If your contract is silent, order one yourself. Homeowners get the same weekly service, 28-day billing and no contract.

One owner-builder assumed his builder would bring a toilet. The framers showed up first, so he rush-ordered one. Another homeowner had a 3-person crew on a 2–3 month remodel. Both kept the unit until the work ended and called for pickup.

  1. Ask your builder if site toilets are in the contract. Get the answer in writing.
  2. Pick a spot on the driveway apron or side yard, level and away from the dumpster path.
  3. Tell your HOA if you live in a planned community. Some have placement rules for temporary units.
  4. Book 1–2 days before the crew starts. Next-day is standard for orders booked by 5 pm.
  5. Call for pickup after final clean-up. Billing stops at the end of that 28-day cycle.

For a room-by-room remodel checklist, read our porta potty guide for home remodels.

Why rent one for a remodel at all? A unit on the driveway keeps crews from tracking dust and mud through the house. It also keeps your bathroom free for your family while the work runs.

callers were homeowners, not contractors. Several needed a toilet for construction on their own property and asked if that counted as personal or business. It can be either.

Delivery

How do you deliver to a jobsite with no street address?

A jobsite with no street address gets a Google Maps pin or GPS coordinates, plus an on-site contact. Text the pin to (940) 275-3799 when you book. The driver calls or texts the contact about 30 minutes before arrival, and nobody has to wait at the gate if the spot is marked.

  1. Send the pin. Drop it on the exact spot, not the subdivision entrance.
  2. Name the contact. Foreman or superintendent name and cell number.
  3. Give gate codes and lockbox info. They go in the driver notes.
  4. Warn us about hazards. Low wires, open trenches, fresh pours and stacked material in the path.
  5. Mark the spot. A cone, flag or spray-paint X. A locked gate or blocked path can mean a trip fee.

One underground utility crew in our logs was on the far side of a creek with no address. GPS coordinates got the unit there the same day.

Denton site conditions

Where should the toilet go on a Denton construction site?

A Denton construction toilet belongs on level, firm ground within about 25 feet of a drivable path, so the pump truck can reach it every week. Denton County has 2 soil types: sandy Cross Timbers soil west of I-35 and sticky Blackland Prairie clay to the east. Gravel or high ground works best on both.

Denton conditionWhat happens on a jobsiteWhat we do or suggest
Sandy soil west of I-35 (Argyle, Krum, Ponder side)Service trucks can bog down on soft lots after rain.Place the unit by the construction entrance or on the rock pad.
Black clay east of DentonClay turns slick and units can lean after a soaking rain.Use gravel or high ground; we re-level on each service visit.
July highs around 96°FOdor builds faster in the holding tank.Shade if possible; 2 visits a week for crews of 10+.
Spring storms, March–JuneHigh wind can tip an empty unit on an open slab.We stake or strap units on request.
Busy routes: I-35E, US-380, Loop 288Our yard on Dallas Dr sits near I-35E.Most Denton jobsites are a short run for same-day drops.

Keep the unit away from the dumpster swing path and concrete truck washout. A used unit cannot be moved until it is pumped, so call us before you re-grade around it. For more placement detail, see the porta potty placement guide or compare units on the standard porta potty page.

FAQ

Construction porta potty questions from contractors and owner-builders

Is weekly cleaning included in the price?
Yes. Every Brandon Rental Works jobsite rental includes one service visit per week: pump, scrub, sanitize, restock toilet paper and sanitizer, and a dated ticket on the door. A standard construction unit typically runs $145–$215 per 28 days before tax, with that weekly service already in the number. Extra visits are typically $45–$75 each.
I'm a homeowner, but it's for construction at my house. Is that personal or business?
Either one works. Homeowners running a remodel or new build get the same jobsite rental a contractor gets: weekly service, 28-day billing and no contract. Put the order in your name or your company's name. Nobody needs to be home for delivery.
Should my contractor provide the porta potty, or me?
Check your contract or ask your builder. Many residential contracts expect the general contractor to supply site toilets, but some leave it to the owner. One owner-builder in our call logs assumed the builder had it covered and had to rush-order a unit. If nobody has it, call (940) 275-3799 and we can usually deliver next day.
My regular supplier didn't show up. Can you get one out today?
Often, yes. Call (940) 275-3799 by noon, Monday through Saturday, for same-day delivery in Denton and most Denton County ZIPs. A same-day fee of $0–$95 may apply depending on route, and dispatch tells you the exact amount before you book. After noon, we schedule the first slot the next morning.
Can you drop it off before my crew starts Monday?
Yes. We deliver Monday through Saturday, 7 am to 7 pm, so a Saturday drop puts the unit on site before a Monday start. Nobody needs to be there: mark the spot with a cone or flag, give us the gate code, and the driver texts about 30 minutes before arrival. The 28-day clock starts on the drop-off day.
Do you need an on-site contact?
It helps. Give us the superintendent's or foreman's name and cell. The driver calls or texts that person about 30 minutes before arrival and can confirm the drop spot. If the site is empty, a cone, flag or texted photo is enough.
Can I add a hand-wash station to my jobsite rental?
Yes. Add a PolyJohn Bravo two-sink hand-wash station to the same order, and we refill its water, soap and towels on each weekly service visit. Crews working with paint, coatings, sealants or chemicals need washing facilities under OSHA 1926.51(f). The add-on is listed as its own line on your itemized quote.
