paid bookings in our call review were standard units. Renters asked about sinks and flushing, but most chose the standard unit for a one-day event or a jobsite.

A standard porta potty fits through a gate that is at least 48 inches (4 feet) wide. The PolyJohn PJN3 is 43.5 inches wide, and two crew members need a few inches on each side to cart it. Our crew can hand-cart an empty unit about 25 feet from the truck.
Most Denton backyard gates are 36 to 48 inches. A 36-inch walk gate will not pass a standard unit. A double gate or a 4-foot gate usually will. If the truck can drive into the yard, the gate needs about 10–11 feet of width and no wires or branches below 12 feet.
| Your access | Will the standard unit get there? |
|---|---|
| Gate 48 in or wider, spot within 25 ft of the truck | Yes. The crew carts it in empty. |
| Gate under 48 in (a 36-in walk gate) | No. We place it on the driveway edge or side yard. |
| Spot more than 25 ft from where the truck parks | Ask dispatch. A closer spot is usually the answer. |
| Truck drives into a field, pasture or lot | Yes, with a 10–11 ft path and 12 ft of overhead clearance. |
| Alley access behind the house | Often yes. Text us a photo so dispatch can check width and wires. |
callers asked the exact unit size so they could clear a spot. One needed about 11 feet of access to reach a backyard. A photo texted to dispatch settles the question before the truck leaves.

A standard porta potty has 6 things inside: a toilet seat over the 60-gallon tank, a non-splash urinal, 2 rolls of toilet paper, hand sanitizer, a mirror and an occupancy latch that shows "occupied" from outside. A vent pipe pulls odor up and out, and the translucent roof lights the inside during the day.
- Seat and lid at 19 inches, close to a household toilet.
- Non-splash urinal so men do not use the seat. That keeps the seat cleaner for everyone.
- Two toilet paper rolls, replaced at every service.
- Hand sanitizer, refilled at every service.
- Mirror for a quick check before going back to the party.
- Occupancy latch with an outside indicator, so nobody pulls on the door.
- Vent pipe and translucent roof for airflow and daylight.
What is a standard porta potty best for?
A standard porta potty is best for 3 kinds of jobs: construction and remodel sites, backyard parties up to about 50 guests per unit, and ranch or farm work. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 allows 1 toilet for up to 20 workers, and the PJN3 has the seat and urinal that the table counts.
| Job | How many standard units | Service | Next read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction or remodel | 1 for up to 20 workers (OSHA Table D-1 minimum) | Weekly, included; 2× weekly for 11–20 workers | Construction site toilets |
| Backyard party, 4 hours | 1 per 50 guests, rounded up; +1 if alcohol is served | None needed for 1–3 days | How many porta potties |
| Party or reunion, 4–8 hours | 1 per 35 guests, rounded up | None needed for 1–3 days | Same guide |
| Ranch, farm or hunting lease | 1 toilet + 1 hand-wash facility per 20 farm workers (OSHA 1928.110) | Weekly, included | Ranch & camp toilets |
| Plumbing outage or septic relief | 1 for a household or small building | Weekly on longer rentals | Ask dispatch |
Ranches and pipeline crews that move every few days can also rent a standard unit mounted on a single-axle trailer. The crew tows the unit to the next work area, and we pump it on the weekly route. Homes on septic are another common use: callers in our review rented a standard unit so party traffic stayed off the septic system.

When is a standard porta potty the wrong choice?
A standard porta potty is the wrong choice in 4 cases: guests who use wheelchairs, a formal wedding where guests expect a flush and a sink, a food event with no separate hand washing, and a spot behind a gate narrower than 48 inches. Each case has a better unit or a simple add-on.
| Situation | Why standard falls short | Better choice |
|---|---|---|
| A guest or worker uses a wheelchair or walker | The PJN3 door and floor are not built for a wheelchair. | Wheelchair-accessible porta potty |
| Wedding or shower with dressed-up guests | No flush and no sink. | Deluxe flushing unit with sink |
| Food served, kids eating, crew handling chemicals | Sanitizer only; no soap and water. | Add a hand-wash station |
| Large formal event with power on site | Guests may expect lights, a mirror and climate control. | Restroom trailer |
| Backyard behind a 36-inch gate | The 43.5-inch unit will not pass. | Place it out front, by the driveway |
How is a standard porta potty serviced?
Every standard porta potty is pumped, pressure-washed, sanitized and restocked at our Denton yard before delivery. A 1–3 day event unit needs no mid-event service under normal use. A jobsite or long-term unit gets 1 service visit every week, included in the 28-day rate, with a dated ticket hung inside the door.
- Pump the 60-gallon holding tank with the vacuum truck.
- Charge the tank with fresh deodorizing chemical.
- Scrub and sanitize the seat, urinal, walls, latch and floor.
- Restock toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
- Check the latch, vent and footing, then sign the service ticket.
When to add a second weekly service
- Crews of 11–20 workers on a 40-hour week.
- June to September, when Denton's average July high is about 96°F and heat speeds up odor.
- Multi-day gatherings with heavy use, such as family reunions or tournaments.
Extra service visits are added per visit and show on your invoice as their own line.
Where should I put a standard porta potty?
Put a standard porta potty on level, firm ground within about 25 feet of where the truck parks. Clear a spot about 5 by 5 feet, with 3 feet open on the door side. Grass, gravel, dirt, concrete and asphalt all work. Keep the standard unit off sidewalks and streets, which need a right-of-way permit.
- Pick the flattest spot. A sloped driveway can tip the unit or swing the door shut.
- Face the door away from the party but toward a lit path if guests stay after dark.
- Mark the spot with a cone, flag or sign. Nobody needs to be home.
- Warn us about obstacles: gate codes, low cable lines, sprinkler heads and parked cars.
- Leave the service side reachable within about 25 feet of the pump truck on long rentals.
- Place it once. A used unit stays put until it is pumped.

What do renters ask before booking a standard porta potty?
Standard porta potty renters mostly ask about timing and space, not the toilet itself. In 27 recorded rental calls reviewed in 2026, 15 were single-day events, 5 callers asked what time the driver would arrive, and 3 asked the unit's size. 9 of the 12 paid bookings were standard units.
