One caller this year was building a new house and managing the build himself. They assumed the builder would bring a porta potty. Nobody did, and the crew was due the next morning. That gap is common, so here is how to sort it out before the first truck shows up.
Does my contractor provide a porta potty for a home remodel?
Some contractors provide a porta potty for a home remodel and some do not. Larger remodel and custom-build companies often include one in their job costs. Small crews, handymen and single-trade subs usually do not. In our review of 27 rental calls, 3 homeowners ordered their own jobsite unit. Ask before the contract is signed.
Ask three plain questions in the bid meeting:
- Is a jobsite toilet included in your price?
- If yes, who services it, and how often?
- If no, do you expect the crew to use my bathroom?
If the answer to the third question is "yes" and you do not want that, budget for your own unit. It is a small line next to the cost of cleaning drywall dust out of carpet.
callers were homeowners renting for construction on their own property, from remodels to an owner-managed new build. One assumed the builder would supply the unit and had to rush an order.

Either the homeowner or the contractor can pay for a remodel porta potty. If the contractor includes it, the cost is already inside the bid. If not, the homeowner rents it directly and pays every 28 days. Renting it yourself means you control the spot, the service days and the pickup date.
| Contractor rents it | Homeowner rents it | |
|---|---|---|
| Who calls us | Contractor's office | You |
| Who gets the invoice | Contractor (cost is in your bid) | You, every 28 days |
| Who picks the spot | Usually the crew lead | You |
| Who calls for pickup | Contractor | You, when the job ends |
| Best when | One GC runs the whole job | Several subs, or you manage the build |
Does OSHA require a toilet on a residential remodel?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) requires employers to provide toilets for construction employees, and residential construction is construction. Table D-1 sets 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. That duty sits with the employer, usually your contractor. We are not lawyers, so confirm specifics with your contractor or permit office.
The legal minimum and good practice are different numbers. OSHA's minimum for a 3-person remodel crew is 1 toilet. Our recommendation is the same unit with weekly service, which is included. For 11–20 workers, we suggest service twice a week. The full table is in our OSHA porta potty requirements guide, and the rule text is on osha.gov (1926.51).
How does 28-day billing work for a remodel porta potty?
A remodel porta potty is billed every 28 days, not by calendar month. The first 28-day cycle is paid upfront and starts on the drop-off day. Weekly service is included. There is no contract: the rental renews every 28 days until you call for pickup, and billing stops with that pickup.
Remodels slip. Cabinets arrive late and inspections get pushed. That is why there is no fixed end date. You keep the unit as long as the crew is working.
long-term callers in our 27-call sample were on 28-day billing. None needed a contract; each one kept the unit until the job ended and then called for pickup.

A remodel porta potty is serviced once a week, included in the 28-day rate. Each visit pumps the tank, scrubs and sanitizes the inside, restocks toilet paper and sanitizer, and hangs a dated service ticket on the door. Crews of 10 or more, or hot summer months, often add a second weekly visit.
Denton's average July high is about 96°F. Heat speeds up odor, so a busy summer remodel may want that second visit. We cover that in porta potty service in Texas summer heat.
Does a remodel crew need a hand-wash station too?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires employers to provide adequate washing facilities for construction employees. On a home remodel, a 2-sink hand-wash station next to the porta potty is the simple fix. The PolyJohn Bravo station holds about 34 gallons of fresh water, soap and paper towels, and it is refilled on service visits.
Hand washing matters most once interior trades start: drywall, paint, tile and finish carpentry. Those crews work inside your home all day. A station by the door keeps them out of your kitchen sink. See the hand-wash station rental page for sizes and uses.
Where should a remodel porta potty go on a home lot?
A remodel porta potty should sit on level ground near the street end of the driveway or in the side yard, with the service side within about 25 feet of where the pump truck parks. Keep it out of the dumpster and material delivery path. Leave 3 feet clear in front of the door.
Remember that weekly service needs truck access every week, not just on delivery day. If a dumpster or lumber drop will block the driveway later, pick a spot that stays reachable. More detail is in our porta potty placement guide.
What if I am the owner-builder on a new home?
An owner-builder on a new home usually rents the porta potty directly, because no general contractor is there to supply one. Order the unit for the day before the first trade arrives, often the foundation or framing crew. One standard unit with weekly service covers most single-home builds of up to 20 workers on site.
New-build lots in Denton County often have no mailbox yet. Send a Google Maps pin or the lot and block number with the subdivision name. Give gate codes for gated sections. On raw lots, mark a firm spot near the curb so the truck does not sink in fresh fill dirt.
- Book ahead of the first crew. Next-day delivery is standard for most orders booked by 5 pm.
- Add a hand-wash station once interior trades start.
- Plan for wind. Open lots get spring storms; we stake or tie down units on request.
- Tell subs where it is. A unit nobody knows about does not stop crews using your new bathroom.
How do I end the porta potty rental when the job is done?
To end a remodel porta potty rental, call (940) 275-3799 and ask for pickup. We schedule pickup within 1–2 business days of your call. The rental does not end by itself. Keep the truck path clear on pickup day; the driver pumps the unit on site and hauls it back to our Denton yard.
Need it longer than expected? Do nothing. It keeps renewing every 28 days with weekly service. For long jobs and farms, see our long-term porta potty rentals page.
