Plenty of homes outside Denton's city limits run on septic: ranch houses near Krum and Ponder, acreage toward Aubrey, older lots around Argyle. A septic system is sized for a household, not for 80 guests in one afternoon. One of our callers this year rented a porta potty for exactly one reason: to keep a family gathering from overloading the septic.
Can a big party overload my septic system?
Yes. A big party can overload a septic system. A septic tank is sized for a household's daily water use, and 60 or 100 guests can put several days of flushes into it in one afternoon. That surge can push solids toward the drain field or back up a drain while guests are still in the house.
Think of the numbers. A family of four flushes a set number of times a day. A party of 80 adults can flush that many times in an hour. Add the kitchen sink running for dishes and the washer running for tablecloths, and the tank gets a lot of water fast.
How does a porta potty protect my septic during a party?
A porta potty protects your septic by taking guest restroom traffic off the house plumbing. Each standard PolyJohn PJN3 has its own sealed 60-gallon holding tank. Guests use the outdoor unit, and on pickup day our truck pumps that tank on site and hauls the waste away. Nothing from the porta potty enters your septic.
Most septic owners keep the indoor bathroom open for family, small kids and older guests. Everyone else uses the outdoor unit. A sign on the bathroom door that says "Restrooms outside, to the left" does most of the work.
Guests rarely mind. A clean, stocked unit with a light nearby and a hand-wash station next to it feels like part of the setup, not a downgrade. The unit also keeps muddy shoes and a line of guests out of your hallway, which matters on a rainy ranch weekend. For dressier gatherings, a deluxe flushing unit with a sink inside is the step up.

To keep guests off the septic, rent 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests for a party up to 4 hours, or 1 per 35 guests for 4–8 hours. Add 1 unit for every 100 guests if alcohol is served. Size as if the indoor bathroom is closed, because that is the goal.
| Gathering | Length | Alcohol | Standard units | Hand-wash stations (food served) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 45 guests, birthday | Up to 4 hours | No | 1 | 1 |
| 60 guests, family reunion | 4–8 hours | No | 2 | 1 |
| 90 guests, holiday gathering | 4–8 hours | Yes | 4 | 2 |
| 150 guests, ranch party | Over 8 hours | Yes | 8 | 4 |
Run your own numbers in the porta potty calculator. If older guests or guests using wheelchairs are coming, make one unit a wheelchair-accessible porta potty.
Where should the porta potty go on a lot with septic?
On a lot with septic, the porta potty should sit on level, firm ground away from the septic tank lid and the drain field. The truck path should avoid both as well. Heavy trucks can crush septic lines and compact the soil. Mark the tank and field for the driver, and keep 3 feet clear on the door side.
- Find the tank and drain field. Your septic records or the last pump ticket usually shows where.
- Pick a spot near the drive. Our crew can cart an empty unit about 25 feet.
- Keep the truck path clear. About 10–11 feet wide, nothing below 12 feet, off the drain field.
- Mark it. A cone or flag on the spot, and a photo texted to (940) 275-3799.

How do you deliver to rural Denton County homes?
We deliver to rural Denton County homes using a street address, a Google Maps pin or GPS coordinates. Add a gate code and note soft ground. Sandy Cross Timbers soil near Argyle, Krum and Ponder can bog a truck after rain. Pick a firm spot near a gravel or paved drive, within about 25 feet of the truck.
East of Denton, toward Aubrey, Blackland Prairie clay gets slick when wet. Same rule: firm, high ground near the road. Our yard on Dallas Dr sits near I-35E, and US-380 and Loop 288 get us to most rural edges of the county. Ranch gates often need a code or a padlock combo, so put it in the order notes.
- Long ranch drive? Tell us the surface: gravel, dirt or pasture.
- Livestock? Keep animals out of the area on delivery and pickup days.
- No cell service at the site? Give us a backup phone number for the on-site contact.
Do I need a hand-wash station for a party on septic?
A hand-wash station is a smart add for a party on septic. Without one, guests walk inside to the kitchen sink, which sends more water to the septic. Our method adds 1 hand-wash station for every 2 toilets when food is served, minimum 1. The station's grey water stays in its own tank.
The PolyJohn Bravo station has 2 foot-pump sinks, soap and paper towels, with about 34 gallons of fresh water. Set it next to the porta potty or near the food table. See hand-wash station rentals for details.
How far ahead should I book for a gathering on septic?
Book a porta potty for a gathering on septic 1–3 weeks ahead for most dates, and earlier for holidays. The septic caller in our call sample booked about 3 months ahead for a December family gathering. Big Denton weekends, like graduations in May and December, book up first. Date changes are free with 24 hours notice.
| When | Septic-friendly step |
|---|---|
| 3–4 weeks before | Ask a licensed septic company if the tank is due for a pump. |
| 2–3 weeks before | Book porta potties and a hand-wash station. |
| Week before | Spread out laundry. Do not run loads the day before the party. |
| Thursday or Friday | Unit arrives. Check it sits off the drain field. |
| Party day | Sign on the bathroom door pointing guests outside. |
| Monday | We pump the unit and haul the waste away. Nothing hits your septic. |
