Denton's average July high is about 96°F, and the heat lasts from June well into September. A porta potty that is fine in April can be rough by August with the same crew. The fix is not complicated. It is mostly timing, shade and a second service visit. Below is the summer plan our dispatchers give Denton crews, remodel owners and party hosts every June.
How does Texas heat affect a porta potty?
Texas heat makes a porta potty smell sooner and feel hotter inside. At Denton's 96°F July average, waste breaks down faster and the deodorizer in the 60-gallon tank works harder. The plastic walls also warm up in direct sun. Heat does not damage the unit, but it shortens the time between comfortable cleanings.
Our standard PolyJohn PJN3 has a translucent roof for light and a vent pipe that pulls air up and out of the tank. Those features help. They cannot make up for a full tank in a sunny parking lot on day six.
How often should a porta potty be serviced in summer?
In a Denton summer, a jobsite porta potty with up to 10 workers needs service once a week, which is included. A crew of 11–20 needs service twice a week. From June to September, we recommend a second weekly service for any crew of 10 or more, because heat speeds up odor.
| Crew on site (40-hour week) | OSHA minimum units | Spring and fall service | Summer service (June–Sept) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–9 workers | 1 | Weekly (included) | Weekly (included) |
| 10 workers | 1 | Weekly (included) | 2× per week |
| 11–20 workers | 1 | 2× per week | 2× per week |
| 21–40 workers | 1 seat + 1 urinal (we suggest 2 units) | Weekly each | 2× per week each |
Ten-hour shifts or six-day weeks count as more use. Tell dispatch your real hours, not just head count. For the legal side, see our OSHA porta potty requirements guide.
calls we reviewed (26%) were construction or repair jobs, from roofing and underground utility crews to homeowner remodels. Those longer rentals are where summer service frequency matters most.

Twice-weekly summer service works best when the 2 visits are spread 3–4 days apart, such as Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday. That spacing keeps the 60-gallon tank from filling up between visits. Avoid two visits on back-to-back days, which leaves a long gap before the next one.
Think about your heaviest days. If the crew is biggest on concrete pour days, put a visit the morning after. If you work Saturdays, ask for the second visit late in the week. We run Monday through Saturday, so a Saturday crew can still be serviced on a working day.
- Tell us your work days. A 6-day week uses the unit 20% more than a 5-day week.
- Tell us about spikes. Inspections, pours and roofing days bring extra workers.
- Keep the ticket. The dated service ticket on the door shows every visit for your records.
Where should I place a porta potty in the heat?
In the heat, place the porta potty in shade on level ground: the north side of a building, under a tall tree with no branches lower than 12 feet, or beside a trailer. Keep the door side open for airflow and the service side within about 25 feet of the truck. Afternoon shade matters most.
Shade does three things. It keeps the inside cooler, slows odor and makes the seat less hot to the touch. On open lots with no shade, point the door away from the west so the afternoon sun is not baking the entry.
- Do not box it in. Walls on three sides trap heat and block the vent.
- Keep the truck path open. A shady spot behind a dumpster is no good if we cannot pump it.
- Watch for storms. In open sun, spring wind is the other risk; we stake units on request.
The general placement rules, like gate widths and low wires, are in our porta potty placement guide.
How do you control porta potty odor in a Texas summer?
Porta potty odor in a Texas summer is controlled by pumping more often and recharging the tank with fresh deodorizer at every visit. Keep the vent pipe clear and place the unit in shade. For crews of 10 or more, a second weekly service cuts odor more than anything else. Air fresheners hide odor for 1 day at most.
- Add a service visit. A half-full tank smells far less than a full one.
- Keep trash out of the tank. Put a trash can by the door for wipes, cups and bottles.
- Keep the door closed. The latch keeps flies out.
- Do not block the vent. Keep tarps, ladders and lumber off the roof.
- Call early. If it smells bad on Wednesday, call Wednesday, not Friday.
Should I add a hand-wash station for summer crews?
Yes. A hand-wash station is worth adding for summer crews. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires adequate washing facilities on construction sites. A 2-sink PolyJohn Bravo station holds about 34 gallons of fresh water, enough for crews to rinse sweat and dust off before lunch. Service visits refill the water and soap.
In July heat, hand sanitizer alone feels sticky on dusty, sweaty hands. Many crews prefer running water. See hand-wash station rentals for setup options.
How do I keep a crew hydrated without overloading the porta potty?
Keep a crew hydrated by giving them plenty of water, rest and shade, and plan the porta potty service around it. Hydrated workers use the restroom more, so a summer crew fills a 60-gallon tank faster. That is a good sign. Add a second weekly service instead of discouraging water breaks.
OSHA's heat guidance centers on water, rest and shade, and on helping new workers adjust to the heat. Read it on osha.gov's heat exposure page. We are a restroom company, not a safety consultant, so set your heat plan with your safety lead.
What about summer parties and outdoor events?
A summer party porta potty for a 1–3 day event arrives pumped, sanitized and stocked, and needs no service during the event. Place it in shade, add a hand-wash station if food is served, and plan evening light. Multi-day summer festivals get daily or nightly service options to stay usable in the heat.
The North Texas State Fair & Rodeo runs in August, and many Denton graduation and summer parties fall in the hottest weeks. For a summer wedding, a climate-controlled restroom trailer is the comfort upgrade. For a backyard party, see our backyard party checklist.
